What it does
When your agent should reach for this skill.
Use this skill to prepare a negotiation brief, review proposed terms, diagnose an impasse or debrief a round with clients, suppliers or internal departments. It is particularly useful when today's agreement, unilateral decisions and behavior change tomorrow's options, information or willingness to cooperate. The deliverable is an actionable brief and, after a round, an updated relationship record. 2
Diagnose the situation before selecting tactics. A competitive bid, a price discussion, a complex package and a repeated relationship need different analysis. Do not promise that every disagreement admits a mutually beneficial deal, or that a courteous process requires accepting unfavorable terms. 35
This package synthesizes public articles, an interview, a syllabus and program descriptions. It does not reproduce simulator rules, scoring or private course materials. Negotiation Dynamics: The Game was developed jointly by Costa and Ingemar Dierickx; the current program describes Deal Maker, developed with Galo IT. The brief, tables and review gates here are practical adaptations, not official course templates. 17
The method
12 steps, restated from Luís Almeida Costa's public work. Numbers link to the sources.
1Define the assignment and diagnose the setting
Establish the decision, parties, deadline, negotiating authority and whether the task is preparation, review or debrief. Classify the setting before recommending an opening or concession. See method: situation diagnosis. 3
2Reconstruct the relationship state
Record prior agreements, separate unilateral decisions, external changes and current constraints. Identify what each previous move changed in subsequent options, information and cooperation. See method: relationship state. 2
3Select the critical unknowns
Rank unanswered questions by whether the answer could change the boundary, agenda or package. Draft genuine diagnostic questions, with a stated consequence for each answer. See method: information. 4
4Prepare distinct negotiating positions
Separate the limit, target, opening proposal and concession responses. Explain the evidence and dependencies behind each; leave unsupported values unresolved. See method: boundaries. 3
5Check credibility before proposing terms
Test promises against capacity and authority, openings against defensibility, and offer revisions against substantive reasons. Fix foreseeable credibility damage before optimizing persuasion. See method: boundaries. 5
6Map interests and differences
Distinguish demanded terms from underlying interests. Identify differences in costs, capabilities, preferences and expectations; mark counterpart priorities as hypotheses until supported. See method: variables. 6
7Build linked packages
Connect concessions to reciprocal terms rather than settling issues independently. Show why each side might prefer the exchange, and verify the whole package against the user's boundary. See method: packages and worked examples. 56
8Test future consequences and uncertainty
Compare immediate gains with later flexibility, information access, credibility and capacity. Specify plausible alternative conditions and unresolved agreement mechanics without inventing simulator scores. See method: packages. 23
9Prepare a response to tension
Identify escalation signals and choose a courteous question, agenda reset or clarification that restores joint analysis. Preserve the boundary while removing threats and personal attacks. See method: process. 5
10Rehearse and revise
Test the agenda and package against likely objections, new information and a refusal. Discuss with the user's team when available; revise the diagnosis when an answer changes the situation. See method: rehearsal. 7
11Deliver or record the round
Produce the brief; after a negotiation, record agreement or non-agreement, unilateral decisions and process observations separately. Capture deadlines and unresolved commitments. See output template. 7
12Review and update
Run checklists/review-checklist.md, repair material failures, identify the most damaging plausible mistake and set one observable improvement for the next round. Update the relationship state with feedback, not just the price achieved. 24
Worked example
How the method plays out on one case.
1: Packaging supplier and a price increase
Scenario and evidence
A buyer pays EUR 1.00 per unit and receives a request for EUR 1.08. They expect to negotiate with the supplier every quarter. Last quarter, the buyer repeatedly changed orders at short notice, and the supplier stopped reserving production slots. The buyer's operations lead has authorized a price ceiling of EUR 1.06 only if deliveries meet the agreed schedule and committed volume stays within approved demand. This boundary is an invented scenario input, not an inferred industry benchmark.
Weak first draft
Reject EUR 1.08. Open at EUR 0.95 and tell the supplier that competitors are cheaper. If they resist, offer EUR 1.04 to keep the relationship friendly. They obviously want volume, so promise bigger orders now and work out deliveries later.
This draft invents competitor evidence, treats a counterpart priority as fact, promises unauthorised volume and negotiates price separately from delivery. It also ignores how past ordering behavior changed capacity access. A friendly tone does not make these commitments feasible. 245
Applying the method
The agent records the order changes and lost slots as relationship-state facts. It asks which costs drive the increase and which form of predictability would change the supplier's cost or capacity decision. In the illustration, the supplier answers that a rolling forecast with four weeks of firm orders reduces rescheduling; the operations lead confirms that this window is feasible within approved volumes. This changes the volume hypothesis into a reported preference, while the claimed cost saving remains unverified. 246
The agent then links price, the firm-order window and capacity rather than accepting them independently. It checks a demand downturn before recommending the commitment. 35
Improved result: negotiation brief
Decision and diagnosis: Negotiate a quarterly supplier package by Friday. This is a repeated, multi-issue negotiation, with price and delivery reliability linked to production predictability.
Relationship state: Frequent late changes preceded the supplier's withdrawal of reserved slots. A feasible forecast commitment could restore access, but an excessive volume promise could constrain later demand responses.
Positions: Limit: EUR 1.06 with the approved schedule and no unapproved volume obligation. Target: EUR 1.04 with reserved slots. Opening: EUR 1.03 conditional on a four-week firm-order window and the agreed delivery schedule. The fictional opening is supported by the proposed operational exchange, not by fabricated competitor prices.
Critical unknowns: What delivery slots can the supplier actually reserve? Does the quoted price include the same specifications? Can both sides confirm that the four-week commitment meets the supplier's scheduling need? Do not finalize until the specifications and capacity are confirmed.
| Issue | Buyer priority | Supplier priority | Evidence and exchange | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Price | High | Higher revenue sought | EUR 1.08 request is known; reduced rescheduling cost is not yet verified | | Firm-order window | Preserve flexibility outside four weeks | Reduce rescheduling | Supplier stated preference; buyer confirmed four weeks is feasible | | Delivery slots | High | Manage capacity predictably | Specific reserved schedule still requires confirmation |
Proposed package: Offer EUR 1.03 with four weeks of firm orders within approved volumes, an eight-week nonbinding forecast and reserved slots for the agreed schedule. A move toward EUR 1.04 requires confirmation of the schedule and unchanged specifications. Do not accept the price while leaving the reciprocal delivery term open. Never exceed EUR 1.06 or extend firm volume without the required authority.
Uncertainty and architecture: If demand falls, the buyer honors the existing four-week commitment and adjusts later forecast periods. Confirm how forecast updates, reserved slots and missed deliveries are recorded and reviewed before agreement. Assess the cost of the committed window under a plausible downturn; if it exceeds approved demand, reduce the commitment and reopen the package.
Tension response: “I understand that late changes have made scheduling difficult. Which confirmed order window would let us agree a price and reserve reliable delivery slots together?” This is invented dialogue, not a source quotation.
Round record, fictional outcome: The parties agree EUR 1.04, four weeks of firm orders and a written slot schedule, with no larger volume commitment. The buyer separately decides to appoint one person to send forecasts. Record that unilateral decision separately from the supplier's commitments.
Next-round update: Check whether forecast discipline improved capacity access. Ask an observer whether the buyer tested the supplier's priorities before arguing about price. The proposed behavior change is to ask about a constraint before responding to the next price request.
Rules that made the difference
- Recording history revealed a negotiable cause of lost options instead of treating the price increase as isolated. 2
- Inquiry replaced a convenient assumption with a reported scheduling priority. 4
- Different priorities supported a conditional exchange; they did not guarantee the exact fictional price. 6
- Feasibility checks removed the unauthorized promise and linked all reciprocal terms. 5
- Separate process feedback and next-round updates prevented a price result from being the entire debrief. 7
